Older homes need more prep
A heritage home usually has a hundred years of paint on it. Some of it is lead, some of it is flaking, and the render and timber underneath have moved and cracked. Painting over that gives you a good result for a year or two.
So we take loose paint back to a sound surface, repair cracked render, fill and replace rotten timber, treat rust on the iron lacework, and prime anything that is bare. The prep is written into the quote, so you can see what you are paying for.
What we paint on a heritage home
- Render and facades
- Iron lacework and balustrades
- Sash windows and frames
- Front doors
- Timber fretwork and barge boards
- Verandah posts and ceilings
- Picket fences and gates
- Cornices and ceiling roses
- Picture rails, skirtings and architraves
Period colours, and the council rules
Much of Paddington and Woollahra, and parts of other Eastern Suburbs, sit inside Heritage Conservation Areas. Repainting surfaces that are already painted, in colours that suit the period, usually does not need approval.
Painting bare brick or sandstone, a big change of colour scheme, or work on an individually listed heritage item usually does. We flag this when we quote.

I highly recommend BrushUp Painting. Mosi and the team painted the exterior of my house which has an awkward shape and was extremely difficult to access the upper level. They also repaired some rotten timberwork so saved me having to get a carpenter in beforehand. Very happy with the end result and the price.
Thank you Mosi for the amazing job you did with our old cottage. You took such great care to provide a beautiful end result. I highly recommend this business.
Very happy with Mosi and his team. We were on a tight schedule and needed the painting completed before moving in, and Mosi was always very responsive and kept things moving without any fuss.
The quality of the work was excellent, and the apartment looks fantastic. What also stood out was how trustworthy and reliable he was. We gave him the keys to our apartment and felt completely comfortable doing so.
I’d happily recommend Mosi and his team to anyone looking for a professional and reliable painter.
Mosi and the team did a fantastic job on my interior paint job. Mosi advised on paints and finishes, and was extremely flexible in timing around other trades. I will absolutely be using BrushUp Painting again!
Mosi and the team did an outstanding job painting our house after full renovation, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. The team handled a range of challenging surfaces with real skill and attention to detail, and the finish looks clean, sharp, and high-quality throughout. It’s clear they take pride in their work and know exactly what they’re doing.
What really stood out was their professionalism from start to finish. They were reliable, easy to deal with, and left the place spotless once the job was done—no mess, no stress. If you’re looking for painters who deliver excellent workmanship and actually care about the final outcome, I’d highly recommend BrushUp Painting.
Mosi and his team recently painted the complete interior of my house. I found him as I had asked my friend who painted her house as it looked great and she put me in touch. They are quick and clean. The whole thing was done in under a week and it looks very fresh and clean. Could not be happier and would use them again!
Mosi and his team did a fantastic job repainting our unit. They were totally professional, courteous and very well priced.
These guys are total professionals and could not recommend them more highly.
Mo and his team were great at painting our house. His pricing was competitive and he started/finished as programmed.
He was able to start with reasonably short notice and willing to do extras that he saw necessary to do a quality job.
He left the site clean and tidy and has made a real difference to the overall appeal of the house.
Will look to Mo again when we need a painter.
I had an amazing experience with Mosi. Their team was professional, punctual, and did a fantastic job. The attention to detail and quality of work exceeded my expectations. My home looks brand new! I highly recommend them for anyone looking for top-quality painting services.
Questions about heritage painting
Usually not, if you are repainting surfaces that are already painted in colours that suit the period. You are more likely to need approval if the house is individually listed as a heritage item, if you are changing the scheme significantly, or if you want to paint a surface that has never been painted. Check with your council's heritage advisor if you are unsure.
We can, but on a heritage home we will tell you to get written advice from council first. Once paint goes onto face brick or sandstone it is very hard to remove without damaging the masonry, and in a conservation area council can order it reinstated.
Many Sydney homes built before 1970 have lead in the older layers of paint. It is safe while it is sound and painted over. It becomes a problem when it is sanded or burned off, so old paint on a heritage home is prepared with methods that keep lead dust out of the house and the garden.
Yes. Victorian terraces usually suit a body colour, a paler trim and a darker highlight for the ironwork and front door. Federation homes lean towards warmer reds, greens and creams. We paint sample patches on the house before you decide.
We fill, patch and replace small sections of rotten timber as part of the prep, and free up and repaint sash windows. If a window needs new sashes or major joinery, we will tell you and work around the carpenter.
